Meet the founder

Luis R. Torres is considered a pioneer in the field of Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities. He is known for his innovative creativity, passion for staff training and advocacy for those with developmental or cognitive delays for over 35 years.

Luis began his career as a Direct Care Counselor at a group home for people with varying cognitive delays and developmental disabilities and swiftly climbed the ranks due to his outstanding performance and consistency in delivering the best possible service to special needs individuals.

Something special in the making…

After obtaining his B.A. in Communication Arts from Lehman College, he was promoted to Residence Manager, It was during this time that Torres implemented an enhanced staff-training program that resulted in high praise from NY State auditors, agency administrators and families of those living in the facility. This training program was subsequently adopted agency-wide after marked results provided noticeable, positive changes within the program structure.

In 2002, Luis designed a Support Professional Training course which he introduced and currently teaches as an adjunct instructor at the Bronx Community College / SUNY Educational Opportunity Center in the Bronx, preparing entry level applicants/employees for work in the developmental disabilities sector.

In addition to his ample experience in the field of Developmental Disabilities, Luis has worked with national magazine, Urban Latino, in both promotional and marketing capacities. This experience coupled with his expansive knowledge of state policy and procedure, allowed him to bring a fresh perspective to his workplace creating a group home that is a step above the rest

Currently, a Human Resource Director with a small Non-profit agency providing residential and Day Habilitation services to people with Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities. Luis also, penned a Mentoring Manual, consults regularly with other industry professionals and also enjoys bringing fun events to individuals with developmental disabilities. He has coordinated holiday dances with the Special Olympics and A Night at the Theatre with the Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre for his residents, friends, and other special guests.
